DO YOU NEED PERMISSION?

Across London you will find that most shops have a small zone in front of them where they are allowed to place some of their displays. The area is often defined by coin-like metal buttons. The zone is understood to be vertically too. This said, there are always businesses that want to push forward into the public realm and in London in particular, it means that by doing so they are in the zone that belongs to the council / highways authority. As such it will require permission. The highways authority has many many rules related to the areas that surround their routes , even about the areas below them (which is why it is so complicated to deliver work related to utilities, for example) In most boroughs there will also be rules about removing furniture at night and even for awning, parasol or other cover to be submitted to planning. Most councils have a document for shops and one for conservation area specific rules) 2. Get some advice from the council to ensure your understanding remains up to date. (Planning evolves and what was acceptable yesterday might not be tomorrow) 3. Apply for planning and any other permissions and follow the approved drawings and conditions.
