Designing a kitchen requires a meticulous balance of aesthetics and ergonomics. Recently, our London studio has been busy developing several bespoke kitchens, focusing on the small but significant details that elevate daily use.
In this post, we share several functional integrations that you may not have considered, but which can significantly improve the utility of your space.
1. Reclaiming Space Under the Hob
If the oven is relocated to a tall unit, it removes the need to bend down during cooking. More importantly, it allows you to maximise the space directly beneath your hob with wide, shallow drawers—perfect for storing cooking utensils and pans where they are most needed.
2. Seamless Material Integration
Are you aware that it is now possible to specify sinks designed to be clad in the same material as your worktop? This creates a continuous, monolithic appearance that is particularly effective in minimalist or contemporary architectural schemes.
3. Integrated Ice Zones for Entertaining
For those who frequently host guests, narrow, integrated sinks can be installed specifically to serve as iceboxes. These allow for seamless entertaining without occupying valuable counter space with temporary ice buckets.
4. Precision in Task Lighting
When integrating LED task lighting, the placement is critical. Beyond simple under-cabinet mounting, light strips can be concealed behind edge trims or recessed into joinery. This provides a clean, architectural finish while ensuring the light is directed exactly where it is required.
5. Specialised Internal Storage
While spice racks are a common request, there are several other functional "contraptions" available. For instance, dedicated internal rails can be installed to hang tea towels out of sight, maintaining a clutter-free environment.
6. Refined Waste Management
The efficiency of integrated bin storage can be improved by adding a retractable tray or shelf above the bins. This is an ideal location for storing bin liners and cleaning supplies, ensuring every centimetre of the cabinetry is utilised.
7. Enhancing Accessibility with Pull-Out Units
To avoid the inconvenience of reaching into deep cupboards, we recommend high-quality pull-out mechanisms. These units are not limited to corner cupboards; they are exceptionally helpful when used in tall larders or under-counter storage, bringing the contents of the cabinet directly to you.
Designing for Longevity
A truly modern kitchen is defined by how well it serves the user. By considering these architectural details during the early design phases, we create spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
Were you familiar with these functional details, or is there a specific feature you would like to see in your next kitchen project?
