During a recent visit to our trusted tile specialist to collect samples for a new commission, we realised that many clients remain unaware of the aesthetic and functional benefits of contemporary timber-effect porcelain tiles.
Choosing the correct flooring is a pivotal decision in any architectural project. While natural timber is often the initial preference, it may not always be the most practical solution when considering longevity, the demands of children and pets, or the efficiency of underfloor heating.
A Case Study in Practical Elegance
In a kitchen project we completed last year, the brief required a flooring solution that was exceptionally durable, maintenance-free, and easy to cleanse. However, it was equally important that the material introduced visual warmth to complement the traditional architectural style of the cabinetry.
Initially, our design proposal featured a Chevron pattern to add a layer of classical geometric interest. However, following a collaborative review, the client opted for traditional planks. The result is a space that feels grounded and inviting, yet possesses the resilient properties of high-quality porcelain.
Seamless Transitions: Internal and External Continuity
One of the primary objectives in modern London architecture is to dissolve the boundary between the interior and the exterior. During our recent technical meeting with the suppliers, we confirmed that these timber-effect tiles are available in a high-grip R11-rated version specifically designed for external use.
This allows us to specify the same aesthetic for both the kitchen and the terrace. When the bifold doors are fully retracted, the flooring creates a seamless, uninterrupted plane that extends the living space into the garden,a detail that significantly enhances the sense of space in urban properties.
