WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING AWARDS
Last Thursday I attended the Women In Construction & Engineering Awards Summit and was impressed by the impeccable hosting by Afi Ofori and her incredible team Zars Media. The choice of topics, activities, speakers, and their scheduling beforehand as well as their light touch management of the process throughout the day made all attendees feel welcome.
Our industry has many types of people with different personalities, backgrounds, and levels/thresholds of comfort and to create an atmosphere for everyone to feel supported is not a mean task.
And the proof of their success is that although most of the finalists came on their own, they left with an expanded network of peers ( whom they will be shaping the built environment with for years to come) and with direct access to senior members of the industry (who they will be able to reach out to moving forward.)
Throughout the day I had a chance to speak with some of the finalists and was blown away by the kindness, strength, and skills they bring to our industry. These women are not only examples of excellence within each of their expert fields but are also generous and committed to having a (much) wider impact.
We shared best practice, discussed ideas, addressed criticism, and "workshopped" areas that need addressing through an honest exchange of opinions and lived experiences with the aim to bring the energy and insight within the room as far afield as our collective networks allow us to.
And this is why for my first post about the event (there will be more,yes) I want to say: Thank You Afi Ofori for letting me be a part of #WICE2023!
I have loved supporting you and this initiative for the past eight years and I can confidently say that each year you manage to make it even better. I am very proud of the impact the team you are leading is having in our industry.
